Abstract
As the domestic health functional food market continues to grow steadily despite the economic downturn, establishment of the safety of herbal medicines developed and researched as ingredients for health functional foods is essential for the growth and development of the health functional food market as well as the promotion of public health. Followed the previous study that reviewed the safety of herbal medicines used for food and medicine in the Korean Pharmacopoeia 12th edition, this study was aimed to review the safety of herbal medicines that are contained in the Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia and contribute to the prevention of safety accidents due to misuse. Among the ingredients that can be used without restriction as food ingredients, dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) was identified as an item of safety concern. In addition, among the restricted ingredients, Aucklandia lappa Decne was identified as an item requiring safe management in the distribution process due to its different origin and possible contamination of toxic Aristolochia debilis Siebold et Zuccarini, and Aquilaria agallocha Roxburgh was identified as an item requiring clear labeling of its origin when used and distributed as medicine and food. In addition to the existing research on herbal medicinal materials listed in the Korean Pharmacopoeia, this study is expected to contribute to the development of the food and drug industry and the realization of a safe food and drug culture by reviewing the safety of herbal medicinal materials as ingredients for food and health functional foods.
